Oh my goodness yes!! FDR was the man, he's seriously one of my all-time favorite presidents...maybe my favorite. He made such significant changes when he was in office...things that are still relevant to this day. Because of him we have trust in the banks and he's the reason that the parties "switched" their priorities. FDR was definitely amazing. :)

I have to disagree about him being the best. He "led" this country out of the Great Depression not with the New Deal, but by entering us into World War II. It forced unemployed (& employed)American men to join the military, it forced industry to produce war goods...essentially, war was good for business. The New Deal programs he originated like the CCC, WPA, etc. were basically not original ideas...in fact, they were not much different than social programs espoused in the Communist Manifesto. If the people work for the state, the state controls them and causes them to lay aside their problems by working for a common goal. The ending of the Depression happened as a result of the war, not FDR or his New Deal strategies.

FDR dragged the country toward a mixed-socialist economy, massive government spending to fund massive government programs, and the idea that income belongs to the government if they want it. He was probably the most egregious usurper of power from the other branches of government to the presidency until our current clown; he pretty much invented the regal presidency that we have now. FDR's policies did not pull the country out of the depression; they delayed the recovery that would have happened on its own.
Best? Hardly. Arguably the worst and most damaging.

I agree. When he became president we were in the Great Depression. The depression was a direct result of the conservative policies of Hoover and Coolidge. FDR's New Deal and Social Security turned this country around. We are forgetting about what brought us into the Great Depression. Putting our Social Security funds into the private sector will only set us up for failure.

He was one of the best, but I wouldn't say he was THE best. All the good presidents (FDR, Kennedy, LBJ) had different pros and cons. FDR made some mistakes at the end of World War II that possibly could have allowed Russia to take over east Germany. But all presidents are human and they make mistakes. So I would say he was very good, but not necessarily the best, and I don't know that we can make that judgment.

Frank r is right on the money with his assessment of the the best and I assume carter as the worst.
FDR was good in some ways but I think his huge mistake was not supporting England earlier regarding WWII. For him to have Churchill continuing to beg as millions are being slaughtered is reprehensible in my book.
Imagine how we would feel if the situation was reversed.
I frankly feel when the dust settles Bush will be considered a greater president with regards to his handling of the war.
FDR's "new deal" enslaved a large number of people with meager handouts costing Americans trillions and continued with extremely poor results until the mid 90's.
His concept of Social Security has been transformed to be nothing as it was intended.

I can't agree or disagree. He is a candidate for the best president in my mind. FDR has done great things for America, but so have other 20th century presidents.

No. It was FDR's meddling in the economy that kept the US mired in depression for years beyond when it would have recovered normally, without government interference. The rest of the world had recovered by 1935, but thanks to FDR, we were in a depression until 1941.
He was also NY governor when the stock market crashed. At that time, it was the governor's job to regulate the NY stock market. Needless to say, he failed.
FDR brought us socialist income redistribution, thanks to his social security crap.
FDR was engaging in egregious acts of war against Germany before they declared war on us. His escorting of British merchants beyond US territorial waters was an act of war. His generous supplying of Britain with war material, gratis, was also a belligerent act.
Yet we were miserably unprepared for the war FDR instigated.
No, he was not a great president. He knew how to talk, but he screwed up this country's economy but good, and brought socialism into the heart of government.

Your use of the terminology "solid interest" is what brought about me to respond to this question. i presently examine a piece of writing from a e book that addressed the unspoiling of youngsters. It noted a actuality that I particularly have observed daily. father and mom overuse that word with their toddlers in a erroneous attempt to construct their vanity. they are rendering it meaningless and not making waiting them for a international outdoors of the domicile the place there is hardly a "solid interest" or "attaboy" heard. and that they are particularly diminishing its fee while they use it as compliment for a job that the youngster would desire to already be doing responsibly. and that's what i think of is the main to being a solid chief: duty. Do the smallest volume of injury in reaching your targets and explaining precisely what encompasses those targets. If any flesh presser would desire to stay as much as this general, i might evaluate them almost appropriate.
