Do you know how to program computers? Because without some fairly advanced skills, this just ain't gonna happen for you.

I once built an experimental messaging system using Microsoft's MSMQ messaging technology... that would be one of the simpler ways, since routing issues are handled for you by the MSMQ API. But you'd want to read up on the architecture of messaging systems like MSMQ, SendMail, or IBM MQ Series and then base your system on that. These messaging middleware bits, by the way, are stuff strictly useful for internal business environments.

On the other hand, if you have dreams of launching the next AIM or MSN, on the other hand, you'd be better off quitting while you're ahead. The market's saturated, and without an army of coders, you'll just never get there...

It took a whole semester of a team of computer science majors to develope a half descent messenger service. This is a big project are you sure you want to undertake such a large amount of work? If so, I would recommend doing a lot of seaches and/or walk-throughs. And a better way of using this space would be asking more specifics.

Download something like http://gaim.sf.net/ or one of the jabber clients http://www.jabber.org/software/clients.shtml and help them out... I would recommend you start with python / xmpppy. You can see an example program here to see what you're getting in to. http://xmpppy.sourceforge.net/examples/xsend.py Good luck!

you are asking a heck of a lot ( you should really look on www.pscode.com ) and it also depends on what language you plan on using as well as other things.
