THE FUMES ARE WAY TOO DANGEROUS FOR THE BABY.

I currently have this dilemna as well. I just bought a new house in January and wanted to wait until it was warm enough outside so I could open the windows to paint the interior. I got pregnant in April, so I wondered if it was safe for me as well.

I did some research on the net and every article or advice forum I read said to wait until the 2nd trimester and to be sure the rooms are very well ventilated. Also, certain paints have more toxins than others. There are some new paints on the market without fumes... beware of these, just because you're unable to smell the toxins, doesn't mean they aren't present.

Encourage your friend to wait another two months... not worth the risk!!!! I am a perfectionist too, like your friend, so I feel comfortable painting my house myself, rather than having friends and family help with it.

there are a million things she can do to help. I wouldn't want somebody else doing all my new house fixing either.

First, she shouldn't scrape. Old paint flaking off, well, you don't know what kind of paint that is, she could inhale it, get into her mouth or eyes and into her bloodstream and straight to the baby. Paint strippers are also far more dangerous than household paints. And she should absolutely not have anything to do with stains or sealants.

If there is outdoor painting that needs doing, she'd be better off doing that than the indoor painting because there's more ventilation. Indoors, make sure all the windows are open and any ceiling fans available are on low and if you've got forced air, you could turn that on the fan setting to help the air circulate.

There are baby safe paints, ask the hardware store and make sure you use those! Even with those though, take precautions with ventilation. And she should certainly wear a mask.

If she's cleaning up the new house, encourage her to use natural cleaners like vinegar and baking soda rather than bleach and ammonia based products (don't use vinegar & baking soda together, it's an explosive combination.) they are much healthier for the baby and if she keeps using them after the baby is born, well, your 2-year-old drinking your vinegar is alot less disturbing than him drinking your bleach.

(To use vinegar, dilute it with about half water and use it to clean any surface, it's great on glass. It can also be used to mop the floor. It's the only thing you should use on hardwood floors. As for baking soda, use it like you would use Comet.)

Very... Whatever the mother inhales.. basically .. so does the baby. Like smoking. It cuts off the oxygen supply to the baby and could cause brain defects.. or at the least learning disorders in the future... i.e. reading, writing.. etc. I definitely wouldn't recommend painting a house while pregnant. She only has a few more months to go if she can't find someone else. Why don't you paint it for her... ?? : )

Tell your friend this: Anything she puts into her body (whether it's food, liquid, or inhalants) goes straight to her baby. How does she feel when she inhales paint fumes? Probably pretty dizzy... Yes, it's dangerous. She can buy a mask at The Home Depot. Just tell her to get one that specifically says it blocks hazardous fumes. A regular old dust mask won't do anything for her.

i am a control freak as well and when my husband and i found out that we were having a little boy we decided to paint his room and my husband and i fought about whether i could help or not and finally he gave in and told me that i could help but every 20 minutes i had to go outside and sit for 15-20 minutes and then i could come back and help we also kept the windows wide open and a fan blowing the fumes out my son turned out fine but she should make the decision as to whether or not she wants to risk it

What makes it dangerous is inhaling the fumes, so if she puts a mask over her nose and mouth then it wont be that bad. Tie a bandanna around her face.

tell her to put her control issues on the back burner for the health of her unborn child and stay out of the house until the job is done and totally aired out.
