I can't get to the login screen on my Windows XP. Instead I get the blue screen of death that says there's a Registry Error. I can't use safe mode, and I can't seem to boot from my Windows XP CD. I can't figure out how to use the Recovery Console. The most recent settings that worked don't even work. My mission is to get at the pictures saved on the hard disk and copy them to a CD, or to get at the Recovery Console.

If it helps any, it's Windows XP Home Edition SP1 on a Dell.

Instructions to use recovery console would be helpful.

I try to boot from the CD and I get a boot failure message.

If you have a second computer available, with both computers turned off, remove the hard drive from the broken computer. Unplug the cable on the back of the CD drive of the second computer and plug them into the broken hard drive,

Boot the second computer and you should be able to see the files on the broken hard drive and copy them over.

Once you have the files off, you put the broken drive back into the original computer, format it and reinstall XP.

Try tapping the f2 key at startup...this should take you into setup...here have the computer boot from -1.cd rom--2.A:\-3. C:\

THERE IS WAY, but i am not sure you can do it,
1- you should boot from a bootable windows98/me cd,
2- then copy files which you want to an other drive.
3- format and install windows again.
4- burn your files to cd.
