It all depends on the person saying it. If they are a real dolt, then I forget about wasting my breath on them. But if they're a little brighter, I'll usually say, "Excuse me, but I happen to be a ______ and did not appreciate that comment. Please excuse yourself to me." This works great with older people who don't expect someone to confront them, I find. I don't make bigoted remarks in mixed company and I sure as hell aren't going to stand for any said in my presence.

Depends where I was. If I were in my home community, I'd probably just laugh, because I'm surrounded by people like myself. I wouldn't feel threatened. Since I live where I am part of a large majority, if I heard someone insult my race, I would dismiss them as being ignorant and unthinking. However, if I were in Nairobi where I would be a part of an insignificant minority, and if I knew that prejudice against my race were a widespread problem,I 'd be more uncomfortable and more likely to try to set someone straight.

Nothing. Unless you feel that way about your entire race of people, you shouldn't do anything. You can't change others' opinions, so just remember that they're entitled to their opinion as are you. Their ignorance will catch up to them someday. It's so much easier to talk about people and things unknown than it is to actually get knowledge on the subject. Overall, you are being the bigger person by not responding at all. Even if you try to stick up for your race, it won't change their choice of words. Smile and tell them to have a nice day.

While "Ignore them" is the mature thing to do, what I'd probably end up doing is make the slanderer feel really stupid over what they said. I like to think of myself as rather educated on the issue of my own people, so I can usually find the mistake in what they said and point it out to them as nastily as I can.

But like I said, the mature thing to do is roll one's eyes and smile.

I don't take anything anyone else says personally. Things a person says about others actually reveals more about the originator than the targets.
