Kurt Cobain!!! R.I.P.

I'm not a fan of either, although I like certain songs from both.

My problem with Kurt Cobain was that his music was not innovative, and his voice was not that powerful. Overlooked bands from the 80's like Husker Du, firehose, Sonic Youth, and the Pixies were the real innovators of the Grunge sound that Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana would mimic. The shame is that Kurt Cobain never really had the chance to take his music to the next level. And while I've never been a fan of Pearl Jam, they were far more experimental. I like the Nirvana Sound, but I do not see anything particularly new about it, except that it was one of the earliest of its kind to be wildly accepted by the main stream.

Freddy on the otherhand had a vocal range that was remarkable. His longevity was alone allowed him to touch reach and influence more people and artists. The lyrics may have been more campy, but the music and vocal stylings were very strong. The music of Queen was unique in its orchestration at the time, but I think that you'd have to credit more than just Freddy Mercury for that.

I'd have to say Kurt Cobain was more influential. Nirvana's landmark "Nevermind" influenced an entire generation both musically and culturally, turning pop music, fashion, and most importantly attitude on its dark, twisted side. As much as I love Freddie Mercury and Queen, I don't think you could say the same for them.

You're trying to compare two distinct types of music and very different types of singer/songwriters.
I believe each one gave their best and each one left a mark in music.
Don't judge their work, just enjoy!

PS - For me, Freddy all the way!!
