My mp3 player just died and best buy gave me a creative vision m in replacement under my warranty. Which was kind of them- but I hate the Creative vision M. It's hard to operate and it won't let me organize my music by filename, but rather only by metatag.

My only other option is an ipod, because that's the only other one they carry that's similar in price to my old player and therefore eligible under my warranty, etc. But I've never used one and in fact I've always avoided them. As such I've got a couple of questions:

DO ipods read filenames, or just metatags?

Also do you HAVE to use itunes, or can I use some other software? Also do you NEED software? My old player just showed up as a new drive when I plugged it in- I don't suppose that will be the case with ipod?

Many thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide. I'm really not sure which way to go with this thing, so I thought I'd try to get a little more info.

Man I miss my old player... :(

You've actually got a great player there in the Vision M. It won best in show at the last CES. It does a lot of great stuff, you just have to get over the fact that it's not an iPod. iPod isn't the end-all, beat-all brand name in mp3 players. Look over your manual, learn how the player works, and quit worrying about your iPod.

Also, for the purpose of using your new player, stay away from anything "i". iTunes, iThis, iThat...just break away from the world of "i" for awhile, and you'll find that you'll be just fine. You do NOT, I repeat, do NOT, have to have the iTunes software for your Vision M player.

Right then
I have an ipod mini silver and i love it its great

you're first question: can you name music by filename

yes of course you can, you can call it anything you like.
You can also search by artist, composer, album etc etc

u do need itunes but it comes with your ipod. it is real great though because

1.) you can easily rate music out of 5 (you can see your top rated songs on different lists.
2.) You can download music from the music store
3.) It comes with a search
4.) You can add album covers to your tracks.
5.) It keeps a play count of all of your tracks

As for the controls there simple enough
There is only really 7 main buttons

The clickwheel - scrolling through lists, adjusting volume
The centre button - selections
play/pause
back
forward
menu - go back
hold - like keypad locking a phone

if youre getting an ipod i wouldn't get the nano.

Although sleek and modern it is easily snapped and scratched
It has half the memory of a mini (only 500 songs)

video is obviously the best ipod
12.5 times the memory

hope this helps you alot

I can only answer a couple of your questions, as I'm pretty new at this.

You have to use iTunes, you need their software, and you also need a specific plug. I believe the iPod reads the filenames, and you can sort. But I haven't figured that part out yet. I do like my iPod, if that helps any.

you need iTunes, which is free (it comes with the iPod, and you can DL it off the iPod site for free). You can organize songs by artist, song name, time, anything. It's a LOT better than creative vision, and you don't need to use iTunes to DL music. Limewire and stuff works too, just drag the music file into your iTunes library

Just to answer your main question...yeah, they can be a little complicated. There's this store in London that's offering a course for 40 to learn how to use it. But if you're willing to tinker a little and use the manual, you could get the hang of it.

I own one and it was hard to get going, but I personally HATE manuals. I love it now. But I still can't figure out how to get movies loaded....sigh...may have to read more info on it.

Ipods are awesome. I highly recommend. they're noy complicated, u just have to get used to the click wheel. It'll sort the songs by song name, artist, recently added, whichever u chose. I Tunes is great ad easy to use as well.

There's a little bit of a learning curve. I highly recommend ilounge.com (especially for iPod newbies). They have tutorials & info on just about anything you need to know. I love my iPod babies!

They are fairly easy to use - but you do have to use the iTunes software.

You can search by playlist (you create) artist, album, song, genre ... It's all Apple based, so it's user friendly.

Go for it - it's a snap to figure out. I did!
