Decide what you want to become in life realistically career wise and set out achieving it.
Look after your heath and always behave in a way that enhances your self respect.
Find a girl you like, go after her and give her your very best. Even if she rejects you, which you must accept with grace, she will always remember you.
Always be cheerful whatever life throws at you. Repay unkindness with kindness, you will feel great for years afterwords.

Our dissatisfaction and craving for betterment stems from the fact that we lack self acceptance. We place our problems external to ourselves. No matter how well (or how poor) we are we tend to set goals that will make us seemingly better. "If only I had a better paying job, everything would be fine. If only I bought a bigger home things will be a lot better". Once we are there something else starts. So the problems here is not exactly what I lack. That I lack is the problem.
I am not a shrink nor am I speaking on behalf of any religion. The fact that you have asked yourself (and now publicly) this question shows that your are now receptive to new teachings which can be the only possible solution. You will need to seek the help of a tool (I make an analogy to a mirror) to help you look into the fundamental notion that you are wanting. There are many ancient philosophical works (need not necessarily be viewed in religious angle) that can help serve as that mirror.

The key to happiness is to have no expectations. Just try it for a day - or half a day. Try not to expect anything. Specifically, when you wake up, don't anticipate that everything is going to go your way, or that it will all be good.
If you get in the shower and you have hot water, enjoy it. If you don't have an accident on the way to work, be glad.
We get in trouble because we tend to forecast how things should go. For instance, we really do assume that nothing is going to go wrong, don't we? If we simply take it as it comes, we aren't constantly disappointed. And that leaves us more open to be happy.

I'm with you on the religion thing.
I've recently picked up a book written by a life coach called 'You can have what you want'. I can't afford a life coach, but if you can that might be the answer. Otherwise try the book (or a similar one), it has some good ideas.
Best of luck!

It's in your nature to always want to evolve. When you stop growing, learning and changing you've died. However it's one thing to continously set and reach for goals but it's another thing to just hate your life. Try thinking about how far you've come. Stop, congradulate yourself, then think about where you'd like to be. What steps should you take to get there? Those are your goals. Focus on trying to acheive them, but don't forget to pat yourself on the back for all that you have accomplished.
