It all started way back with the live action and cartoon serials of the 1930s and 1940s. The directors needed a believable way to show Clark Kent changing into Superman. As technology had not progressed too much in the area of Special Effects, it was difficult (especially with live action) to show Kent changing at super speed in a believable way. So, they came up with the idea od having him change in phone booths, which back in the 30s/40s were EVERYWHERE. Every public building usually had at least one on every floor, and you usually couldnt go more than a block on the street without seeing one. So, there was always a nearby phone booth no matter where in Metropolis Kent happened to be when Superman was needed.

my guess is because he wants to keep his identity a secret... or it could be because it makes the people who watch superman question it because he is supposed to be faster than a speeding bullet... but only the writers can tell you why he changes in the phone booth we can only guess...

Just in case somebody with super vision is watching.
Can't be too careful. Except someone with super vision could see inside a phone booth - actually someone with normal vision can too.

He couldn't hold his clothes and get dressed if he was going at that speed. It would take both hands to get dressed, so what would be hold his clothes with? They'd fly right out of his hands and he'd be naked when he stopped.

The wind drag on his clothes would leave them in shreds if he tried to change in mid-air. Besides, where would he put them?
