first if they have finishes on them now you will need to strip them down and then sand them. They have sanders just for this job - one for the big area and a smaller one for the edges - you local tool rental place should have them. Once you have stripped and sanded then you can do any misc. repairs needed and then clean real good (they do have products that clean wood for staining but really are not needed). Then you are ready to stain - be sure and check the stain in a small area out of the main stream of view to make sure it is what you want. Good luck

the only thing i can add to ricks is that you might want to use a wood conditioner to help keep a constance color plus the stain will penatrate better.
