I think I'm going to have to replace the starter on my 2002 Escape - and I'm wondering about how much it will cost...a few hundred dollars? a thousand dollars? HELP!

The starter motor itself typically runs $75-$100.
One hour of labor max. $60-$100 depending on mechanic.

Should be under $200 + tax.

I should only cost a few hundred dollars. If you know someone who works on cars. It would be less expensive to buy the starter from Auto Zone. Changing a starter is really not that hard to do.

Good Luck...

The cost of the start is between $99.00 and $160.00 just for the part. Now lets remove the idea of "its just a starter". If they had to remove a intake or drop the engine cradle those take a lot of time. Shops look up labor time and charge what their hourly rate is. So if a job is 2.0 hrs and they charge $65.00 per hour you would pay $130.00 in labor. So without knowing their rate or the book time for that job its hard to say if you got ripped off. Granted I just posted in a 5 year old question hopefully this will give some idea how they charge.

a couple hundred. if you have someone trustworthy to do it, you would be better off. you can buy the starter yourself and return the old one to get your core value back. a starter realy isn't a hard job. disconnect the battery!!!

if it's more than a few hundred, find another, more honest mechanic. $250 would be pricey
