It is indeed called a caduceus, and actually hails back to he Bible - Old Testament - Exodus (I think). God gets Moses to cure a plague by raising up a snake wrapped round a stick.

So, a very old symbol of healing.

The ancient greek words for poison and medicine are similar and can be interchangable so the snake with poison became a symbol
