I am writing a grant for a "green" building. It is for an environmental education center. I have a set budget of $195,000.00 to spend on the building, but I need to break the budget down...can anyone help me?

This is for a local gov't so we have a facility services division that will do the building. (this will be cheaper)

The first thought would be to ask for a non-green cost appraisal - and then consider which would be the most efficient place to use environment-friendly materials or to save or even produce energy.

The priority very much depends on where the building should stand - in Seattle the insulation would be much more important than in Florida...

Your green items are going to be any renewable resource used in your building. i.e. Wood Doors, Wood Windows, Door Jambs, some insulations, etc. Usually governmental projects require a certain percentage of "green materials" on a job. depending on what type of building it is will dictate the budget amount for all of the different trades on "green materials".

I designed a GREEN building for school.
It was 2500 sq. ft. and self sustaining.
The grand total was $657,000.00.

With that kind of budget stick to the Energy Star appliances and the GREEN building materials.

Wool rugs, recycled glass and low flow fixtures are a start.
