Bleaching Timber?

Question

Many years ago i was told you could bleech dark grained timbers lighter by using either Bleach ,peroxide or a combination of other chemicals does anyone know the correct way, I am wanting to make furniture with the timber afterwards so i thas to be usable

Thanks for any info in advance, for statistical purposes i live in Australia so for those of you who suggest buying a particular product to use, can you tell me who manufactures it as well as contact details as not all products sold in other parts of the world are sold here.

You can use a 50/50 mix of bleach and water to remove color from timber.

Do this BEFORE any attempts at finish sanding, as it WILL raise the woodgrain.

After bleaching, you will want to 'rinse' off the bleach/water mixture a couple of times with clean water.

Rockler also carries a wood bleach, which Ive provided the link for...even if you cannot get this particular product in Australia, you should be able to find something similar.

Be SAFE -- use gloves and safety glasses!

Home improvement stores do sell a product called Wood Bleach that will change the color of wood. It is fairly easy to use, but you may wish to wait until you have made the furniture before you use the treatment, so you won't need so much of it. Also, you will need to seal the wood afterward.
