Depends what you are reffering to obviously ( You werent specific as to the physical size of the device or type of memory it uses, ie a hard drive that is external ie it spins and makes sounds when you access it or flash memory based like an ipod or mp3 players ( to a certain degree ) because some mp3 players have hard drives inside of them.

From what you are asking in the question all i can say is it would be an external peripheral that has some memory whether it be a hard drive or flash based.
