Here;s an interesting point that no one has brought up yet involving this debate. It's called the 10th Amendment to the Constitution. Massachusetts has legalized gay marriage. For the government to write a law making gay marriage illegal, it would require an ammendment to the Constitution, because simply writing a law would violate the 10th amendment, states rights.
I find it a bit hypocritical that, a year and a half ago, this man put his hand on the Holy Bible and swore to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States", and now he's trying to re-write it.
The point is: Massachusetts, by taking the lead, made it an issue for individual states to decide, not the federal government.

A couple of reasons. First, this being a midterm election year and with the Republicans appearing to be weak at the polls, by briniging this issue up (again), the more Conservative elements of the Republican Party might be inclined to go vote based on this one issue alone. "Rally the Base" it is called.
Another reason may be that this is actually something that President Bush believes in. Personally, I think someone behind the scenes told him what to say and do with this issue.
A 3rd and unverified reason is that it may be his OVER response to some guilt feelings he has over something he has done in the past. Seems there are a few people making accusations of President Bush having gay relations 20+ years ago. I don't know how reliable that information is but it's out there and might have to be considered when looking at why he is trying to have Congress pass such hateful legislation.

I think it was pretty silly on just about every level you can imagine. He upset gay and liberal people (again) and also alot of republicans as well. After all, they all know that the country has alot more serious things to deal with than messing round with the constitution to ban gay marriages, such as being at war for example, or having an "illegal immigrant crisis". Even some of the people who support the ban got upset because it was generally felt that the ban had no hope of being voted through. t looked like all Bush was doing was trying to make them like him, especially after he publically announced that he wouldn't even be bothering to phone up senators and such to ask them to support the bill (Like he would with something he really wanted to be passed).
I guess it's possible is that he actually does think it's a good idea and that he personally wants to see the ban through because he feels strongly about it and he's not the kind of person to forget about something just because there are bigger things around to worry about (after all, there almost always are). But that doesn't really explain why he won't call round to drum up support, so I'm thinking it was most likely a political maneuver that backfired...

It's bullsh*t. Gays are people like the rest of us. They should have equal rights all over. Bush trying to put a ban on gay marriages just shows even more now what a narrow minded waste of space he really is.

I think Bush has so many more important things that he should be concerned with. The war he started, for one thing... The economy and the inflation of gas prices. And why are we so focused on keeping gays from having marriage rights when we could be spending our time, effort, and money trying to help people who REALLY need our attention? I would rather spend time trying to do away with the welfare system, get people jobs, and get them off the streets. People without homes should be a bigger concern than people who have same-sex relationships inside their homes.

It really isn't about Bush, or what the majority believes. It is about what the Word of God says. The one who created all of us has the final word, since this is HIS world.
The Bible clearly and consistently tells us that homosexual activity is a sin (Genesis 19:1-13; Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9). God does not create a person with homosexual desires. A person becomes a homosexual because of sin (Romans 1:24-27), and ultimately because of his or her own choice. A person may be born with a greater susceptibility to homosexuality, just as people are born with a tendency to violence and other sins. That does not excuse the person choosing to sin by giving into their sinful desires. If a person is born with a greater susceptibility to anger / rage, does that make it right for them to give into those desires? Of course not! The same is true for homosexuality.
To give sanction to homosexual marriage would be to give approval to that lifestyle, which the Bible clearly and consistently condemns as sinful

I can think of a thousand more important issues that they should be discussing, the national debt, health care, war in Iraq and Afganistan, FEMA, education.....He is trying to rally the 29% of people who haven't lost hope on him so he can get his poll back up to 34%, but he is a lost cause. By the way, every fanatic leader needs to opress some group. Hitler had the Jews, Bush has the homosexuals. In 2004 66% of people were against homosexual marriage. in 2006 51% of people are against homosexual marriage. At this rate we will have homosexual marriage by 2016.

Gays are better off not getting married, do they want all the hassle of divorce and one partner being able to take half of what they own?
Anyway the majority of people will say that marriage is a bond between 2 people in the eyes of God, well God doesn't like gays so why would he want to see them getting married?
They can always go to Las Vegas, they seem to marry anyone and anything there.

This is what President Bush proposes:
"defining and protecting marriage as a union of a man and woman as husband and wife."
This is what God created and commands:
18: The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
22: Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib [j] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
24: For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
The only difference between the two:
The one proposing this law is finite, the One Who created/commanded this
Law is Infinite
So the finite creation (mankind/humans):
35:15: Again and again I (God) sent all my servants the prophets to you. They said, "Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and reform your actions; do not follow other gods(do anything you want to do) to serve them. Then you will live in the land I have given to you and your fathers." But you have not paid attention or listened to me."
So the result of all our decisions without God being in them are:
6:5: The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
3: And the LORD said, "My spirit shall not always strive (struggle in opposition) with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years." (we will not live forever in THIS life, but...)
Meaning:
11: And I saw a great white throne, and him (God) that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12: And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
But...we will live forever after we die depending on the choice (accepting Jesus as Lord & Savior) we make while we're still alive...
13: And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14: And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15: And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Be Blessed. Peace Out.

Good!! Those nasty, sick and perverted as* reaming c*ck suckers should be shunned in public. What you do at home is your personal business, but not when it comes to the law. Nobody likes to see all that nastiness out in public. The marriage institution is based on a Man loving a woman! Homophobia is alive and well, and it should. Society does not support this, just a few backwards a*s outspoken individuals.
