Presuming you are counting by thousands:

M=1000
V with a bar/horizontal line over it = 5000
X with a bar/horizontal line over it = 10000

So
3,000 = MMM
4,000 = MV with a bar over it
5,000 = V with a bar over it
6,000 = V with a bar over it M
7,000 = V with a bar over it MM
8,000 = V with a bar over it MMM
9,000 = MX with a bar over it
10,000 = X with a bar over it

For very large numbers (five thousand and above), a bar is placed above a base numeral to indicate multiplication by 1000:

V for five thousand
X for ten thousand
L for fifty thousand
C for one hundred thousand
D for five hundred thousand
M for one million
