If I go to my doctor complaining about pain when I put tampons in, will he have to do an internal examination? That's why I've put it off for so long, because I don't want to be examined. Does it hurt, having an internal exam?

They should do one just to see what is going on in there. I don't think it hurts but is uncomfortable and is over with before you know it. You should really get it done because you would rather be safe than sorry!

It can be somewhat uncomfortable, and being nervous and tightening up can make it worse. You really need to understand that the doctor is not looking at you in a sexual manner during these exams, he/she is looking at you as a patient with a problem. The doctor will also have a nurse present when they do the exam. I'd recommend telling either the doctor or the nurse that this will be your first exam, and that it's scary to you. They will understand, and take more time with you and give your more explanation about what's going on. You may want to suggest that he use a pediatric speculum if you are a virgin.

STANLEYS 2001~Honestly, unless you are a woman under there, you've got no business commenting on what an internal exam feels like for a woman. You've never had a Pap test, or any other vaginal procedure for that matter.

No worries~after awhile you just pop up on that table and say, "Ok, let's get it over with!"

Yes, the OB/GYN will need to do an internal. As to it hurting, it really depends on the doctor's technique. Ask them to use the smallest speculum available and go very slowly. I take it that this will be your first OB/GYN visit. Remember to breathe. It isn't horrible or terrible, but, having a compassionate doctor can make all the difference in the world.

If it makes you feel better, the better exams that I have had were done by men. I figure it's because they have no concept of what it feels like when they are examining you. Women know from personal experience what it feels like to manipulate there.

How would you expect your doctor to determine the cause of your pain without an "internal" exam? It's called a pelvic exam and it is sometimes a little uncomfortable. Frankly, it's my least favorite part of a check up. But the more tensed up you are the more uncomfortable it will be. I know it will be difficult but try to relax as much as possible and focus your mind on other things. Fortunately, the exam is short. Like Nike says "Just do it".

The best thing for you to do would be go to a female doctor, she can help. If there is pain sensation, some things not right, might be that you are alergic to the cotton, or maby the size of the tampon you are using is to big? could be as simple as that, but getting a pap is a good idea that will put your mind at ease. No it doesn't hurt, it isn't comfortable because someone is checking you out, but better to be safe then sorry! we all have to do it hunny, sucks I know, my daughter doesn't want to either, but we have to maintain a healthy inner side just as a healthy outerside!
Take in a book to comfort your self, headphones, something to help you relax....you will be fine and after the first time, its all gravy! Good Luck

It hurts more to DIE of some disease that went un-diagnosed until it was too late.

Most exams are relatively PAINLESS...

However... if inserting a tampon hurts... you could have a serious condition.

Stop putting it off

SEE A DOCTOR.

Go to a FEMALE Gyno if it's an embarrasment thing.

Seriously... Putting off an exam when there is a PROBLEM makes NO DAMN SENSE.

Ha. The exam isn't that bad. No pain, just some pressure.
It is important to find a Doctor you are comfortable with, and remember, they are Doctors and have many hoo hoos.

The first couple of exams are awkward but you get past that. It is very important to get exams to make sure it is all working correctly.

1. Stop wearing the tampons.
2. Schedule an appointment with your OBGYN now. Every young lady should have an OBGYN appointment at least once every 2 years until they are 18 or sexually active, and then annually thereafter.
3. No, it doesn't "hurt," although you may experience a bit of discomfort until you are used to the sensation.

It doesn't usually hurt, but if a tampon hurts you then the exam might. Just tell the dr. they probably just LOOK at first to see what may be wrong & then be extremely gentle if they have to do more. It's not normal for it to hurt, so go see the doc.
