My girlfriend and I are doctoral-level psychology students - we are disagreeing on the effectiveness of the withdrawal method. She is on the pill... I believe that the withdrawal method would further increase protection against pregnancy than just the pill alone - albeit a slight increase, but an increase nonetheless. My girlfriend thinks its baseless and that she is just as unlikely to get pregnant with or without the withdrawal method. Can anyone lend input, preferably with verifiable numbers so that I can convice her otherwise? Point out that I'm wrong if i am too :)

The birth control pill is 99.9 percent effective. The withdrawal method is around 40 perfect effective. If you take the pill properly, it is near to impossible to get pregnant. You could add withdrawal for extra protection, but I have been on the birth control pill for four years and have had not even a scare. You should be perfectly fine with just that.

No one knows, but the chances of getting pregnant are very small. Some women forget to take the pill on the wrong day. Pull out is no fun.

Anyway, pull out is ineffective since semen is escaping before he has a climax. (for those not on the pill)

If you don't want to use condoms, why not use foam.

I don't know specific numbers, however my neice was just born a few days ago. She was conceived with her parents using withdrawal/pill. Like another poster said, if you're not ready for the consequences, don't be having sex.

The first time I got pregnant, I was on the pill and most of the time, we used condoms. I still got pregnant. I got pregnant with my son on depo. The only thing that is 100% effective is abstinence. If you aren't ready for the consequences (ie: aids, children, herpes) don't do it!

I think that you are right. even though withdrawal would only give a slight more protection...it still would give you more.
