I am assuming you mean the hole(s) on the map in the shape of Lesotho (and Swaziland, which is more of a dento in the north east). The reason for them being there is simple: Colonial history. Although they were British Colonies, they were not (or, in the case of Lesotho, only briefly) included in the Union of South Africa that became independent of Great Britain in 1910 and are therefore not part of South Africa.
For more information on the history of Lesotho try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesotho
And for Swaziland go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swaziland

These "holes" are two small countries: Lesotho and Swaziland. The latter is not really a hole but but something like a notch at the east of South Africa because it has borders with Mozambique too.

If you are referring to a MAP of Africa....the "HOLE" you see in South Africa is the Country "Lesotho" - it is not a hole...it is a different COUNTRY in South Africa

Is this map of yours close to a dart board?
1) Oh that's Kimberly's big hole for mining diamonds.
2) Lesotho is regarded as a neighboring country and will not be shown on certain maps.
