a square is 10 ft.x10ft. space. as others have said it takes 3 bundles per sq. for coverage. if a roof is 12 ft. from the bottom (eve) to the top (crown) by 35 ft long it will take 13 bundles.

example: 12 x 35 = 420 divide by 100 = 4.2 . 4x3= 12 one bundle=.33 of a square

As others have said 3 bundles = one square of shingles
What no one has mentioned is the tool known as a carpenters square. It's an 'L' shaped tool that is at a perfect 90 degree angle. It is ruled on both arms from the inside and outside corners. It is used for MANY tasks, from making sure a joint is 'square' (at a 90 degree angle) to making measurements for roof truss angles, to laying out stair runners. I wouldn't be without one!
