Places to hang out? Well, you can go down to Piccadilly Circus, where there are lots of people hanging around (there is also a sports shop -- lilywhites -- there). You can hang around Nelson's Column near the National Gallery. You can hang around the parks (Hyde, Regents). You can visit Whiteley's and all of Oxford Street for more shopping.

Catch one of the double decker sight seeing buses at Victoria Station and you will be able to hop on and off the bus in front of all the sights and attractions. Two different companies run this service. They both offer the same tour at the same price except one of the companies ticket is valid for 1 day while the other offers a ticket valid for 2 days at the same price.
Among other things Victoria Station also has a McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks and there's a Pizza Hut right in front of it with an all you can eat pizza deal.

I will just mention a few I actually went to and enjoyed.

-Piccadilly Circus is alright has some shops, Harrod's dept store is pretty good but expensive.

-You can hang out at the various pubs all around London

Museums -
British Museum (Esp if you like Classical or Egyptology)..its big attraction is the Rosetta Stone
Imperial War Museum - its pretty fun to look at the historical vehicles, aircraft and British/European artifacts..etc

I went to Tower of London..it has a lot of armor and the crown jewels there...it is a must see in London.

Definitely get a travel pass for the Tube. Riding the Tube is entertaining in it's own right! So many of the stations have unique tile walls, they are cool. Also you can get absolutely everywhere in a very timely manner.
