Pros:
We learn more about the exact sciences (i.e. chemestry, physics, biology). Studying the contents of space gives us something to compare ourselves with and allows us to draw conclusions on a universal level. For instance, if we find life life elsewhere and it has DNA, we can theorize that DNA is an absolutely necessary component of life.
We advance technology. In order to study space, we have to advance our knowledge of propulsion, mechanics and energy (to name a few). Expanding our knowledge of these things transverses to easier/better/more useful developments here on this planet.
We will eventually (if the human race makes it that far, but that's a whole different subject), after we're through raping Mother Earth need to leave this planet in search of "greener pastures." We have to study space to develop the technology to do so.
It creates thousands of jobs.
Cons:
It costs billions of dollars every year to fund the projects of space science, but it's comparatively small compared to the U.S. budget. In 2005, the NASA budget was something like $13 billion. This years defense budget was somewhere around $513 billion.
Some of the technology we develop through space science (in the wrong hands) can be used in a destructive manner.
The pros far outweigh the cons.

There are definitely a few pros to space research. Lots of the things we use every day stemmed from space exploration in some way. Velcro and Teflon were both developed for space exploration and so was Tang drink mix. Without space exploration, we wouldn't have satellites either. No satellite TV, no satellite communications, no GPS, and no weather satellites (although that probably wouldn't change the accuracy of forecasts by too much; they never get them right anyways.) I suppose you could go with the desire to find the origin of the universe, except I believe God created the entire thing, so I see no sense in trying to find that. Nothing comes without some cons, though. Space research costs a TON of money and isn't exactly environmentally friendly, either. Being an astronaut isn't all that safe, and the technology we use to fly into space is pretty outdated as well. Just my opinion.

The pros of the space research plan is to further our knowledge of the existence of intergalactic beings and the environment of which we sustain our daily lives on.
The cons of space research is that there is so much to be done on our planet, why bother the cycle that has taken us through the past 5 billion years, and we should come more to the point of the dangers we present the world as a whole. With our cars and bad habits, it's only a matter of time before we suffer the greatest loss, our lives. When we could be spending the millions of dollars on a cure for most threats to our life stile, we have to spent it all on the research that only helps us understand where we came from. Why not take care for our further years and children, before we discover the truth.
That God made us, that is the answer the researchers are going to find, so why waste millions on the questions we already know the answers to?

Pros: You would be able to see the dark beauty of space and it's galaxies and stars and planets and black holes and stuff. It's a great experience to see everything! I would love to be an astronaut and see the moon's surface up close, or maybe be in the generation during which people invent the coolest space shuttle ever that is so fast it can take you to Pluto in just 10 or 15 years or something.
Cons: If you were the astronaut, you often have chances that the space shuttle you are in may get trashed in space and leave you stranded in space with no oxygen so you would die. Unfortunately, if you were the discoverer, you could regretfully discover something that's hurting our environment on Earth and our atmosphere and stuff. But that's also a pro because it's good to know what's hurting you and what you can do to stop it.
More cons: It costs a whole lot of money, and that is very true! I'm not lying about that!

Pros : many things have been developed in space to help make life easier such As the cordless drill. Much medical research has been done there too. Possibly they could create new cures for diseases that are incurable. Also it has brought Nations together to work together in space possibly a step to world peace. In my 40 some years the ISS has been the first project as a joint mission involving other countries. In the 1960's this was unheard of.With the mission to Mars robotics played a good part in exploration and also the meteor impact will help us learn about them before we have one coming right at us! Con's: People who don't understand the mission in space are complaining about the cost, also the loss of life from previous shuttle launches. The problem there is it is taken for granted that every shuttle mission will be a success and nothing should go wrong. We have a long way to go before we can fully develop a somewhat safe space craft to reach space and come back safely. Loss of human life and cost of the project are always the two biggest cons.

pros - we exapand knowledge of our universe and our physical reality. we may find things in space that can help us in the future, plus many, many technologies, such as.. the microprocessor! were invented to advance space travel, and of course from that the entire personal computer industry and all that cascaded out of that came to be! We may eventually be able to harvest energy and materials from space or encounter other lifeforms that would be the farthest off dream. The laws of physics are the laws everywhere -- if we can find the unified theory of matter (remember einstein's e=mc2 for mass/energy? yeah) then we would have a complete formula for the physical universe! there is no telling where we could go from there!
cons - i used to think it was very expensive, but compared to this stupid "war on terror" and "iraq war" -- we could have well OVER funded EVERY SINGLE space dream on the boards and more. So WAR is what is keeping us from exploring the known world and learning about our true origins. The only cons might be that not everyone can benefit from the research or should I say profit, but again on a grander scale it benefits all mankind, not just a few war profiteers. Incidentally, satellite technology, which mans our cell phone, GPS and other technologies are all offshoots of space research and exploration!

Well, for pros: we do see more of the universe, which could be important to the human race near the death of the sun
Cons: Space research does cost a great deal of money; also, many people have died on space missions in the past, so there is always a looming threat of more death

I will be working with Mars rover data in my research for a Master's Degree, and I have to say that there truly is no end to what we can learn from space. We could find new elements, new lifeforms, new laws of physics even (think black hole)... A lot of people think that the money spent on space research would be better spent somewhere else, but I disagree. Learning more about our solar system, galaxy, and even universe will let us learn more about ourselves. To top it off, when I look at an image sent down from the rovers and actually think how this is the first time anyone has seen that particular spot on Mars, it just boggles my mind. Space research is all pros as far as I am concerned...

Pro: just about everything you see with modern electronics, from small low power consumption computers (and displays), digital imaging, biomedical sensing, etc., had origins in the demands of space research. Don't forget those weather satellites, which revolutionized weather prediction. Ditto general earth imaging, GPS navigation, etc.
Con: cost. However, it's a drop in the bucket compared to what's being spent on wars (and not just those waged by the U. .S.) And a lot of the private space flight research seems to be wasted on setting up "tourist" flights rather than doing something people can learn something new from...

I would say that with the pros. Could be Finding new Things. Like New Minerals, that may help us. Finding New Worlds Possibly one that we could live at when our world becomes overpopulated. Maybe ever Meeting new Life forms. The Cons, the worst would be the cost, it cost an awful lot of money. Space is Dangerous, an Flying into and out of it.
