Try to find out where they first got into your house, and block the entrance. Block as many holes inside and out as you can find. Especially look around all the electrical outlets. Move furniture, look behind appliances, etc. The expanding insulator foam in a can works pretty well to block the holes.
Then remove all food sources. Wash your dishes every night, clean up crumbs the kids leave under the table, take out the kitchen trash daily, keep bread and crackers and cereal in the fridge or plastic containers, clean the crumbs out of the bottom of the toaster, everything.
Then you can get rid of the mice left in the house. If your kids are small, you can use old-fashioned traps in places they can't reach. Bait them with peanut butter and set them each night. Check them every morning, before the kids start running around. If your kids are older, like 6yrs and up, you can use mouse poison. Show the kids what it looks like and tell them that it will make them sick. If using traps or poison won't work for you, then you will need to call an exterminator.

I had a problem like this also, but not a bad as yours. I would definitly set up a lot of traps. If you call a pest exterminator the most they do is set up traps for you. I called once and the woman told me all they would do is put glue traps under the house. I saved money and just went and bought a ton of traps. I would put them where I know the mice were going to be and when I caught one I would replace it with a new trap.
We moved into this house and didn't know it had mice. We put all the food we brought from our old house and put it on the floor. It was in crates. The next thing we know, we saw a ton of mouse poo. YUCK.
I believe the best thing would to just set traps and keep setting them. A cat would also help with the problem. If your house is raised off the ground, I would look at covering any holes around the bottom. We eventually got rid of all the mice.

We just got rid of mice in our house, and frankly it was not until our pest control man took pity on us and planted some traps that we finally did. He'd found droppings in the crawl space under the house and said they came in through even the smallest opening around pipes, vents and other orifices. Trying to control your infestation by yourself might be very hard. The last resort the pest man would use was a sticky substance in a trap that caused the mouse to die, being unable to get free. If you have a minute, let me look up my sources on mouse traps, etc.
Well, I only found one, so it must have been the best of the lot. I'll give you the URL under sources. Obviously I decided that my two little mice (as it turned out) were bigger than me, as I resorted to the free help of the pest expert. Good luck with getting rid of your little buggers. They are a mess.

get a cat, preferable a spayed female as they are the best hunters...
make sure all food and candy is put away... mice wont be in a house that doesnt have food for them...
poison is cruel and your kids could get it... traps are iffy the sticky tape trap is horrible and cruel the spring traps are ok though, but honestl the cat will be your best solution, plus having a cat around eventually the mice will learn the smell of the cat and stay away

your going to have to get the local govenment involved for an infestation this big. you may have to move out for a couple of days. but teh govement workers will sort it for you.
do it now. if one of them chews though a wire, or your water tank it could burn down / flood your house
