A few years ago I was driving with my son and husband on a long car trip. On the other side of the highway I saw a van go into the gully median and start flipping in the distance. It was litterally flying through the air. It landed on the mini-van right in front of ours.
I remember having the where-with-all to check behind me and start breaking. I neither hit the car in front of me or was hit. The poor people in front of me couldn't stop from being hit from something that seemed to come from the sky.
We got out of the car and went to the mini-van. It had two little kids, a dog, a mom and dad. Every car that pulled off was getting blankets and caring for them. I got my dogs leash because they couldn't get to theres. The roof was so caved in. Yet they all walked out alive.
The dad was the worst off. He was driving had a lot of glass in his face and I think was a bit shock, but his kids were obviously shaken and he made that his focus. He was holding his crying son and singing Thomas the Tank engine songs as we awaited help to arrive.
People in crisis situations can do amazing things. Make split second decisions, provide assistance and comfort.
If you ask me you see the best in people at such times. Adreneline takes over and they move on this incredible autopilot. It's amazing.

Wide eyes, rapid breathing, open mouths, mass confusion until a leader emerges, usually not the one with the best skills to handle the situation but the one who is able to shout down all the others.

through work i have redcross training, and i'm grateful to the woman who calmed me and used her cellphone almost instantly after I was struck on bicycle by car..who herself had the same training..and everyone else who responded through recovery in the city where i live. It strengthed my feeling for the place and people in general.

I noticed that all remained calm until the situation was under control, then we all collapsed in our own way.
