According to the Internet Retailer magazine in their The Internet Retailer Top 500 Report, here are the top categories sold on the Internet in 2005. http://www.internetretailer.com/top500/

2005 % of total sales:

Products sold by mass merchants/dept stores = 26.5%
Computers/electronics = 25.6%
Office supplies = 15%
Apparel/accessories = 10.2%
Books/CDs/DVDs = 3.6%
Housewares/home furnishings = 3.5%
Specialty/nonapparel = 3.4%
Food/drug = 2.7%
Health/beauty = 2.5%
Sporting goods = 1.9%
Flowers/gifts = 1.7%
Hardware/home improvement = 1.2%
Toys/hobbies = 1.1%
Jewelry = 0.9%

Think of these products as your best bet because they have built-in demand and proven saleability on the web. Then consider what you can start based on your resources (if you have limited resources, consider what you can start realistically).

- check out stores in yahoo, ebay and other directory to give you some ideas what are selling in the internet market today. millions of products sold on the internet
- even if you have good idea, you may not be able to find good and steady flow of supply of the product from suppliers (if you can find one).
- so, it might be wise to start thinking what you can offer to sell, things you have access to, which is clearly superb in price, quality or uniqueness /has clear competitive advantage against competitors.
- then you have to find the niche market, find out how you can take advantage of the internet, specifically for the product (better service, new creative ideas to make your customer happier, at less cost..etc)

what would I buy from a website? in short, I will find something which I like, if the price is right, which I cannot conveniently buy around where I live.

One easy way to get started is to set up as an affiliate marketer. No fees to join and can be up and running if a very short time.

Don't expect to wake tomorrow with a million dollars in your bank account but if you work it right you can make money. Get ideas from this site. I use a couple of their products.
