Descartes answered this question when he broke down how does he know that he actually exists in his Meditations. After breaking down everything that he could not trust fully, he finally came up with Cognito Ergo Sum ("I think therefore I am"). One aspect he covers is how does he know that the life he is believes he is living isn't actually a dream. It was a very enlightening read and I would recommend it to others. His breakdown of how he knows that God exists is alittle bit of a stretch, but all in all it was quite good.

Descartes isn't at all convincing.

the only way to determine "the real" from the dream is to give an explanation of the latter in the terms of the former. To know that we're apart of your fantasy, you'd have to be able will, craft, and shape this "dream." Go ahead smash your head against the wall, see if you can crush it.
