It got away by running up my curtains and disapearing. Someone please help me! I really want to get rid of these things.

decon is good for getting rid of rodents. But you have to make sure your children understand not to touch the containers. Also you should try to find where they are getting in and plug the holes with steel wool. Good Luck!!

Okay, here's the scoop... I work in Pest Control and this is what I tell clients daily:

First set spring traps nears walls and foundations as this is where they like to travel. Spring traps are available at any hardware store or Walmart. I tell people to imagine a whisker's length from the wall which would equate to about 1 - 2 inches. Bait with peanut butter, cake frosting or cooked sausage. They really seem to go for these and it is actually what we use in the office here.

I recommend staying away from the glue traps. You will likely catch mice on them but you will hear them screaming and they have been known to self mutilate to get off the trap. You don't want your kids finding that, I'm guessing.

Baits, although effective, usually cause the mouse to dehydrate and go in search of water. Ideally this would mean that the mouse goes outside. Realistically it usually means the mouse gets into an obscure area, like a wall, dies and stinks to high heavens. They will continue to stink for about 3 weeks and it is nauseous!

The biggest deterrant to mice is steel wool. They won't chew it and it works wonderfully if you pack the steel wool around the pipes coming into your home. This is the most common entry area for rodents.

Good luck!

Mice are very unsanitary, destructive, and can carry diseases, so getting rid of them is really important to do.

Go to a hardware store and get a tin box 'live trap' that you wind up and leave on the floor next to the wall. It's like an enclosed ferris wheel that turns one notch at a time, and zips the live mouse into jail.
Bait it with a blob of peanut butter. It will catch the first mouse, and that mouse will squeak and attract the others. You'll catch a LOT of them.
You MUST find out where they are getting into the house. They can get in very small holes, the size of a dime. Close ALL holes and make sure you do NOT leave ANY food out on the table, on shelves or anywhere that will attract them.

If it's not YOUR house or apartment, get after the landlord.

Lots of things you can do. First thing is to relax and make a plan. If you can afford it call an exterminator. They usually can put down poison but make sure that it will not be harmful to your children. If this is not a viable solution get at least two cats. This should solve the problem unless the mice have a way in and out like a revolving door. In that case you have to find their point of entry and seal it immediately. Then get boric acid and pour it along the perimeter of the room that is infested. The mice will eat it and die. Get plenty of mice traps but place them where the little ones cannot get to them.

Go to the local animal shelter and Get a Cat!!....it might be best to get two so they can be more company for each other, (plus they're an endless source of amusement for humans). Just the mere presence of a cat or two in the house will keep those pesky mice away. If the kids are old enough take them with you to pick out their new pets. If you do get two, it would be a good idea to get a couple of litter mates because they are already used to each other.

That is totally unsanitary, not to mention dangerous. Those little critters carry rabies, and no telling what other diseases.

I had a mice prob. in my home in December. They were confined only to the area under my sink. I used spring traps, with all kinds of bait, but you really have to coat the trigger mechanism with the bait. I used the following from most successful to least successful:

Popcorn (really jam it into the trigger parts, I caught 4)
Bacon (skewered on the pole that holds the trapping bar open, caught 3)
Peanut butter WITH Honey (caught 3)
Marshmallows (caught 1, but he was a juvenile)

They snapped the cheese baited ones without getting caught, but stole the bait.

We filled the holes in with that spray foam stuff, AFTER we tossed some Decon down in the holes. We've not had a recurrence of mice.

I recommend using gloves to dispose of the traps, and make sure the traps are set on top of newspaper, as I experienced a few bloody ones.

Snap traps are the quickest and since the mice have to die anyhow, kindest way to kill them. I know it sounds gross, but I reused the traps, since I didn't want to go out and buy more than 4. But I cleaned each one off with soap and water, and caught more with the ones I used over and over more, fancy that. I don't know if it was the smell or what, but the mice kept coming.

Also, it's not always that your home is dirty so much as the mice smell food. I used to store my trash can under the sink, which is the most likely culprit for drawing them in to begin with. I can't use the cupboards along the floor for food storage unless it's canned, because I am afraid the mice will find another way in to eat the crackers and cereal, you know? I hope it works out for you, and as a mother myself, I totally hear you about needing the mice OUT! I can't believe they are getting so bold as to get on your bed, tho! That must've been scary!

It's important to find where they are getting in at, as that's the best place to put the traps, but if I were you with the bold mice climbing onto the pillow in my bed, I would be putting some traps under my bed and around the perimiter of my room, LOL, that would freak me out!

And people in here are right, the sticky traps are noisy and the kids can hear it, too... I don't like mice in the house, but at least kill 'em quickly~!

I recommend getting the stick-pad mouse traps. With the traditional style mouse traps you have to bait them and your kids could get their fingers snapped in them. I'd also caution against using poison for the mice since your kids could get into the poison. Place the mouse traps around the walls where you see them running. Also make sure that any food or clothing is picked up around the house. You also may want to put your trash in a metal trash can with a lid so the mice can't get into it to have stuff to eat. Finally, I would check around the outside of your house for any holes or openings that the mice could get into your house through. You will want to stuff up the holes with fiberglass insulation or steel wool too keep them from getting in. That should cover the three main bases:

1.) trap them
2.) get rid of their food supply
3.) stop their way of entry into the house

You could get a cat, but cats can be messy and possibly leave a half eaten mouse lying around the house.

First ya need to find all the places they are entering your house from...That means going wall by wall, room by room and plugging even the tiniest hole. Mice can squeeze through spaces you wouldn't think a cockroach could get through. Duct tape or aluminum foil will work if you have nothing else. Check under doors to see how much space is between the doors and the floors. Then get mouse traps and place behind couches and chairs where kids can't get to. Don't get poison cause then they will just crawl off and die and you will have to hunt them down a second time when they start to stink. Plus ya don't want poison where a kid can get it.
But the first thing you have to do is hunt under every cabinet, door and every wall to find their entrance holes.

The first question I would like to ask you is how clean is your house? Most rats and mice come in a house that is kinda dirty. The bugs come first, then the rats come in. Get pest control to come in your house; it might be sort of expensive but you don't want to live in a house with rats. Then after your problem is solved make sure you and the kids keep your home clean well. I used to have a habit of not cleaning; once I saw a roach behind my trash can: I became a clean freak all the way!

Set traps. Also go around the whole house and look for anyplace where they might be coming in at and close it up. They can fit through the tiniest places. Under sinks around the drain pipes is a big door for em.
Oh and on the traps use peanut butter. It is thick and harder for them to get off so usually the trap does get em.
