An IPOD is a type of mp3 player. There are many others. There's so many that it would be tough to tell you which to pick unless I knew a lot more about what you want to use it for.
Personally, I buy COWON Iaudio mp3 players because they have FM radio / voice recorder / work with any OS / plug and play / no DRM / etc.
However, IPODs are very easy to use for first timers. They are the only mp3 players that work with Apple's "Itunes" music download service (though they don't work with any other music download service).
If you're buying this as a present for a 14 year old, I can almost guarantee that the 14 year old doesn't care one bit about features. They want an IPOD cause it's just so cool. I'd say get them an IPOD NANO unless you know they already have a ton of music files and need the extra storage that the hard drive models give you. (like the Video IPOD)

Ipod is great. It's usually bigger than other MP3's. You can manage it through itunes on your PC. Go one the apple website and have a look. I have Nano, but the problem is that they scratch easily, but just keep the little plastic covering you buy it with over the screen part of the nano and it should be fine. Mine is. Cut it off just above the circle key pad thingey and you will still be able to see the screen after a long time. Just buy a sleeve or something for it to protect the rest of it. You can buy those on ebay or on the apple website.
Other MP3's are ok too. It saves a lot of money but ipod just has more settings and stuff. In my opinion it's worth it paying the extra money but it depends on if your child would be careful with it. It's not a toy and they can't throw it around but it's great if you look after it :) Mine is 2 GB and you can put 500 songs on there.
Hope this helps

Same thing.
However, Ipods have internal batteries that must be recharged. This is a pain in the neck when the battery runs out. Also, Ipods limit you to use only music that is paid for. In other words, if someone gives you an mp3 to listen to, you may not be able to.
You want an mp3 player that allows for a AA or AAA battery. This way, when the juice is gone, you can just replace the battery and it's good to go. With an Ipod, when the juice runs out, you have to hook it up to an outlet and wait for it to recharge. Ipods also have a high return rate.
Get insurance when you purcahse an mp3.

the biggest distinction between an Ipod and the different MP3 participant is that once tunes are on the device, Apple makes transferring archives off the Ipod puzzling. in case you do not care to workout this function it would not really count number. some MP3 gamers do not help the AAC format, which Apple does. i for my section favor a non-Apple device, as i favor some thing smaller than an Ipod and do not sense i prefer to carry each and every song in my library immediately.

an ipod is just a brand of mp3 player
mp3 player is the product: like mobile phone
ipod is the brand: like nokia
i have an ipod mini and its cool. Itunes is a must because of all the sorting and playlists you can create. Obviously ipod videos are flash but my mini is a lot better than my brother's nano (in my opinion)

They both play mp3's, but normally and I-Pod will hold more songs and do more than most of the other mp3 players will.
