Just stop signing into the one you don't want anymore, it will automatically close after a month or so.

Depends on where your old one is, but most providers don't have an option for cancelling.
Your best bet would be to let all of your contacts know your new address, set up a forwarding order on your old e-mail (most programs offer this option); if forwarding is not available, periodically check the old e-mail for important e-mail.
If you get something you need to respond to in the old account, forward it to your new e-mail address and go there to answer it so that the sender will automatically respond to your new e-mail (but include a note about the change in your response).
DO NOT answer any e-mail from the old address, especially any kind of spam or commercial e-mail. Eventually, all of your important contacts will have your new address and you'll find it unnecessary to check the old e-mail. Most providers will cancel your account after a set period of time (usually more than 3 months) of inactivity.

it depends.
1. For company/school/organization/etc address, you might want to ask the administrator of the company/school/etc to delete your email address.
2. For free public email (e.g. Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc), they usually have cancellation policiy after being unused for a certain period of time. Or there might be also options somewhere for cancelling your account with them. You might need to read the help for this.
3. For paid email address, you might want to consider contacting the company which you create the email address, and ask them to close your account.
4. You don't actually need to close your old email address if you've got a new one. You could use them both at the same time (I have 4 email address, and I used all of them, except one, which I originally planned to be my spambox, although the plan never done), perhaps one for friends, and the other for your spambox.

It depends on who you are with - a lot of companies look for addresses that haven't been used in a long time and cancel them when they do a cleanup - other places just keep you on collecting junk mail - but if you don't go back to it, it won't matter.
