Three friends went to buy 3 toys of 20 rupees each. Since they bought 3 pieces, the shopkeeper decided to give a discount of 5 rupees. He sent back 5/- through his servant to be given to the 3 friends. For easy division among the frends, the servant secretely put 2 rupees in his pocket and gave 1 rupee each to 3 of them as the discount. Thus, a toy for each of them cost 20-1 = 19. Total cost for 3 toys comes: 19 x 3 = 57. The servant has 2 rupees in his pocket. 57 + 2 = 59. But they had spent 60/- (20 x 3) for the 3 toys in the beginning, but here the calculation comes only to 59/- (i.e. 19x3= 57 + 2(servant's pocket). Where is the 1 rupee gone ???

A tricky question,but, here is the answer:
Amount of money paid by 3 friends = 60 rupees
Amount of money returned by the shopkeeper = 5 rupees
So, money should have been paid by 3 friends = 55 rupees
If only 1 rupee was returned to each one, then the amountof money they paid = 57 rupees
Basically, the 3 friends only got a 3 rupee discount and not 5.
this is show here
55+2 = 19 * 3
57 = 57
If you say that 57 + 2 = 59 rupees then the remaining 1 rupee is kept by the shopper.

They pay 19* 3 = 57 rupees
the shopkeeper take 55 of them
the servant take 2 for him
since 55 +2 = 57 no problem
The two rupees the servant take must be subtracted from 57 not to be added to them
