A freak is not an idiot. There are some really smart people who are freaks or do freakish things. There are idiots who have never done anything freakish, but people who are immature do freakish things to them and they may lash out in a freakish way. Freaks are completely decided upon by society. I think that a person who thinks an idiot is a freak might be a freak him or herself, but then again, I might be a freak to some in society for saying this.

A 'freak' within the understanding of today's societal norms IS a person that appears to 'look, be, or act' OUTSIDE of today's societal norms.
"Freaks" include those of genius, the extremely talented, and people that are emotionally 'different' for whatever reason.

As a noun, it pertains to an individual who goes against what others consider to be "normal." This is highly subjective. One society who eats human flesh (canibal) may consider killing and eating a rabbit to be "freakish."
As a verb, it pertains to a person acting in a highly unorthodox, explosive, non-rational way. As in to "freak out."
Other definitions vary, such as "to dance" is "to get your freak on."
