Mostly because they are mixed. Whites and blacks have been mating (and yes including the rape) for the last 400 years in this country. For a reason started in slavery any child of a black parent is considered black (by society), for the past 400 years or so. HOnestly if you look at the DNA most black people in USA have a very high percentage of european DNA. Heard a report on NPR about this.

Because of the mixed heritages. Many African Americans have a history of Native American, Caucasian mostly in their families, however it doesnt end there. I am Af-Am & I am pretty fair skinned (caramel maybe?). My parents are both 'bright' as I call them :-) I have Native American in my family but its 2 generations back. I dont know about all that lack of sun stuff but its moreso the mixture of most of our heritages, whether it was willing or by 'rape'
