The red rain was identified as the spores of aerial algae which settled into the clouds and was released by the rain.
Although mysterious their have been reports of similar occurrences in other parts of the world.

There is a scientific explanation for that and I think I might know what it is. I have seen "red" snow before, when I lived in Montana, and it was caused by the clouds forming around a dusty area where the soil was mostly clay; therefore reddish tinged. When the snow came down, it was also reddish. Same thing for the rain in India I would guess.
