It's a strange question because as long as turntables have had pitch control, DJs have been altering vinyl speed.

Arguably scratching could be called playing records at the 'wrong' speed, so all the Grand Wizard Theodore could be cited in that.

What about 'screwed and chopped' pioneer DJ Screw, he's gotta be the man who made a whole musical career out of drastically changing tempos of tracks?

Or what about the use of hip hop breaks in hardcore, were any of them beatmixed in live?

John Peel never INTENTIONALLY played things at the wrong speed, but a classic quote of his was (after playing 'Higher State Of Consciousness' by Josh Wink for the second time:) 'I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that sounded better when I played it the other night, at the wrong speed'. Bless him. I still think his top riposte was when some HM bore was speaking loudly and at length in a crowded lift and ended up saying 'All in all, I think you'll find there's a lot to be said for Ritchie Blackmore'... a quiet droll voice from the back of the lift came back with 'Not that much, surely.....'

John Peel. I can correct the poster above because I can remember many years ago he couldn't figure out what speed a record should be played at - so he played it at both speeds.

I don't know, but John Peel had the most incidences of serendipity with the speed of records.
That guy was a legend.
