Well, the primary purpose of a television commercial is to attract and grab the attention of viewers, so that viewers will notice them and the money goes into their pockets. Besides being superior in volume, advertisments are usually more colorful or dark. They go to the extreme.

I always heard that it was to get your attention. Most people get up from the t.v. at commercials so they have to be louder. This has been happening at least since the 80's. I don't remember it going on in the 70's or before tho!

As annoying as it is it does get you to notice it. Even if you boycott those products most people won't so they aren't going to change. One of my favorite commericals and one that REALLY gets the attention though is one for a local Fireworks store. It is 30 seconds of silence. They put this 30 seconds of silence is brought to you by the store and when you are ready to make some noise go there.

Oh I know what you mean! It's definitely the intent of whichever company to get your attention. It's rather annoying though, if they make a catchy tune and memorable commercial they shouldn't have to resort to tactics like that.

Yes, the commercials are louder than the program.
It is done so you can hear the commercials from the bathroom, the kitchen, and the laundry room.
It is done on purpose.

You get up to go get soemthign to eat or go to bathroom during commercial breaks and networks know this so they turn up the volume to ensure you hear the message. However, I think they passed legislation regarding this, may want to look into it.

It's automatic in our house to mute commercials....... I hate that tactic it only annoys me, doesn't make me want to rush out and buy their product.
