It depends on the quality of the garment. I wash all my clothes (Except WOOL) with pretty hot water 50°C+. I have a washer which heats the water and you can set the temp you want. Whites get washed with almost boiling water and nothing ever has shrunk!

your clothes have a tag on them that tells you how to wash them, you really should follow the suggestions, washing things in hot water, that do not need hot water(only whites should be done in hot water) can damage the clothes over time.

Sometimes, especially wool, mohair, and cashmere. It also adds to your energy bills. I wash my clothes and linens in cold water nowadays. Everything gets just as clean, and I save a bit on my oil and electric bills.

hot water will shrink wool and totally ruin it. Anything 100% cotton will shrink, but not enough to even notice. Read your care labels.
