Past, present and the future are related. Past experiences and mistakes affect the present and future. Knowing ones past, be it personally, national history and religious one, gives you better understanding of your self, and also of ones ideas, thoughts and beliefs. Ignorance of the past can make it very difficult to face problems, past mistakes teach you what you did wrong, which help you to tackle problems in the future easily.

I would not say History affects people, I would say for People to understand the present they have to know their past, as someone very wise said.
