It's very likely that it passed to humans via monkeys (or other apes/primates) -- but it probably didn't "originate" there. Indications are that forms of the AIDS virus have been around for a very long time -- it's just that the virus recently evolved to be able to infect humans.

yes.. or some other primate or tropical animal. The thing is we don't know for sure. What we do know is that it was spread to humans via really savage or perverted lifestyles. Either someone was literally living in filth and disgust, eating unclean meat and brains of animals, drinking the blood of an infected animal, or perhaps someone was actually having sex with the animals.
Then, perversion spread it from there throughout the world. You can only imagine that someone living that filthy a lifestlye must have also been involved in other sorts of "alternative" lifestyles. (You know how it spread so fast, I don't even have to say it).

AIDS is thought to have been originated in sub-saharan Africa in the twentieth century. Both HIV-1 (majority of people with AIDS has this type) and HIV-2 (largely confined to West Africa) are of primate origin coming from the chimpanzee.

AIDS seems to have been existed for longer time than officially declared. Specialists continue to argue about its origin. But for sure Gays, heterosexuality and lack of hygiene mostly in Africa, are the principle causes of its dramatic spread.

Nobody knows for certain, but there is some evidence that it's a mutation of a monkey virus. They're working on it.
