it might depend on which state/country you are in. the states i have lived in do not require you to change your last name, it is optional. you could always have both you and your husband hypenate your last name.

No, it's not required that you take your husbands name. I took on my ex's name but after about 13 years, I realized that I just couldn't handle writing it anymore. For some odd reason, I just never could get used to writing his last name after mine. So, I went back to my maiden name. Boy, that made it much easier when we got divorced years later!!
I am with someone else now and I have written his name and have no problem with it. I think that not being able to handle writing my ex's last name was a sign that we shouldn't have been together in the first place (it didn't help that he was a liar, cheater, drug user/abuser, abuser of women, believed that it is his right to do all of this, etc). My boyfriend and I plan to get married someday, probably summer of 2007. I plan on taking his last name. :)

You can keep your name, but how does the person that you are going to marry feel about it. My husband didn't like it at all, so after 5 years I changed it.

It's not required but it is tradition. I couldn't imagine not take my husband's name when we married. My mom didn't want to "lose" her maiden name so she uses it as a kind of second middle name and took my father's name. Many women chose to hyphenate their maiden name and the name of their spouse. Just remember that if you chose to keep your maiden name and use his at all, it will make it difficult when you have children (ie; whose name will he/she have? Will their name be hyphenated). In the end, it's your decision but you do need to talk to your soon to be hubby about it.

No, your name can stay the same. Or you can take your maiden name, made it your middle name and take his name.
It shows unity as a family unit.
I have two friends that didn't change their name...and they are both divorced. Out of all my friends these are the only two...go figure.

Don't know where you are from, but in the United States you can keep your maiden name, or hyphenate, or whatever you want to do. Congrats and good luck!

in the US, most states do not require that you change your name.
I know of this one couple that got married. She was very dominant over him. She made him change HIS name.
