Anybody who is not independently wealthy must live on money -- doctors, lawyers, engineers, mechanics, painters.
Most of these people will make whatever the market will bear. (You don't see a lot of poor doctors around.) But public defenders, public interest lawyers, some small firm lawyers -- don't seek great wealth from what they do.

Do mechanics live to repair cars or make a living repairing your car? Anyone can go to school, learn either profession, be successful and honest, yet always be considered a scumbag, which, let's be honest, mechanics and lawyers all have a little scumbag in them, otherwise they'd offer some type of discount or 10th visit free card. Never happen, you know why, because there's enough idiots who'll pay $$$, working extra hrs for less is not worth it. Coupons for Consultations, brake jobs, tire changes, lube jobs, just get you in the door, your final bill will included crap you never thought of. Filing fees, disposal fees, double fees for waiting in the waiting room, triple fees for phrasing your questions in the form of a question??? Dispute a charge and both offer "option B", "you can take your problems somewhere else and get "F-ed" by one of my former classmates. "Call this number and tell them I said to call", this is lawyer/mech code for "this person is looking to be "F-ed", see you at the class reunion."

It depends on the type of lawyer. For instance, personal injury attorneys are out for the $$. Family law attorneys may be in it due to an experience and prosecutors definitely arent in it for the money!!

They work for justice. Some are better than others at achieving this. And yes the legal system needs fixing. And while money is important to many of them they work very hard for it.

Usually, lawyers take advantage of a corrupted legal system to benefit financially. However, there are some attorneys who base their profession on ethics- especially those who do pro bono (free) work.

"Truth" depends on the person's point of view. Some people, no matter the circumstances, think they were right and the other party wrong. So its all relative; truth is immaterial.

Some are actually in it to help fight injustice but unfortunately, too many of them just want the big bucks.
