Uninstall whatever it came with, it's most likely just a 90-day trial anyway. Provided this is for home/personal use and is not going to be used for business purposes then there are any number of free anti-virus applications you can get. My personal preference is AVG Free, http://free.grisoft.com/ but there is also Anti-Vir, http://www.free-av.com/ and Avast, http://www.avast.com/ pick whichever one you like and use only one (do not install more than one anti-virus program).

But don't stop with anti-virus software you also need anti-spyware software which is all of the following:

Spybot S&D, http://www.safer-networking.org/
SpywareBlaster, http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
Adaware SE, http://www.lavasoft.com/
Windows Defender, http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

And lastly get some firewall software like ZoneAlarm, http://www.zonelabs.com/ or the Sygate Personal Firewall, http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=53687 note to turn off the Windows Firewall once you have one of those installed.

If you're going to be using this at home, you might want to get a wireless router which will not only provide you with a hardware firewall protecting any desktop wired to it and any laptop on a wireless connection connected to it as well. Make sure to enable WPA encryption on your router as well.

I like Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security Suite. It has system and email antivirus as well as firewall protection in one program. The company provides continuous updates to the software and virus files, and it's easy to use for beginners and more experienced users as well.

The price is reasonable, too, $49.95 online download. You can also find it at various retailers, and lots of times you can get an upgrade or competitive rebate to knock the cost to $20-$30.

I have used Norton and McAfee before with various problems. Most were conflicts with other applications running on my computer. Both of those programs are famous (or infamous) for that.

I've NEVER had any problems with Trend Micro.

Used f-prot it is the smallest and non intrusive software I ever used, it does the job without slowing your machine and the price is better than other brands, a lot of people say norton is the best or macaffe but I dissagree, I am an adminstrator with over 100 PC in my charge and with f-protect I only had one infection where f-prot was able to stop before any really damage could ocured to the computer or data, after f-prot stop the virus in its tracks with a blue error screen, I was able to go in safe mode and used the system restore in XP to get the computer back to a working order.
If you want a good protection without slowing dond your pc use f-prot here is a link: www.f-prot.com

It didn't come with anti-virus software? That's unusual. If you want free stuff then Grisoft has a free anti-virus tool which seems to work well. Norton is good too. I've had touble with McAfee hogging resources.

Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite, Spybot Search and Destroy, Microsoft Antispyware Beta, McAffee, cant really think of any others that ive had that were good. but one thing that i HIGHLY RECCOMEND: DO NO USE NORTON ANTIVIRUS. we had it and it was a piece of crap. it let soooooo much carp through that we lost control of my machine and could do anything. so we had to re-format tha drive and i lost EVERYTHING that i had put on there. so i reccomend more than one. Zone Alarm and McAffee are the only ones you have to pay and you get a second firewall w/ Zone Alarm. its cool.
