Babies younger than 6 months *cannot* digest anything other than human milk. Giving him solids wouldn't do him much good, because it would sit in his stomach for long periods of time undigested, and keeping him from recognizing that he is hungry for *nutritious* foods.

Moreover, introducing solids too early raises a baby's risk for asthma and allergies, and possibly cancer and other diseases. It *probably* won't kill or permanently damage him, but why risk it?

I started feeding my child rice cereal at 4 months. That satisfied him for awhile. I started feeding him baby food about 5-51/2 months. I started with vegetables and waited a few days between each new food i introduced just in case there was any allergy. I would talk to your doctor also and see what he recommends as well. I hope this helps a little bit! :-)

Babies are ready when they start gumming their baby food and are sitting up by themselves. Rice cereal is a good start. Also, to make it through meal time, you can purchase a baby "food taster". It looks like a pacifier, but it has a mesh bag on the end instead of a nipple. You can fill it with vegies or bread and give it to baby. They can taste and gum, however, no big pieces will come through to choke on. My 5 month-old loved it! Watch out though. Once babies get a taste of the good stuff, they start turning their noses up at baby food. Make sure you don't introduce sweets and junk. Babies naturally appreciate the great taste and will turn down healthier choices, even at their young age.

You need to start with one ingredient foods like the baby rice in a box. From there, move on to fruits and veggies etc. By 6 months, small amounts of what you eat.

To the responder who claims starting solids at a week old. That's impossible.

My kids both started small amount of cereal at 3 months old. The formula alone was not satisfying them.

I started my son on jar foods at 4 months. My doctor said that was fine but to start with the orange ones and have him eat one kind for at least 2 days to see if he will have an allergy before starting another one. My son already gets cereal in every bottle. He is a big eater so we had to add that in at 3 months.

Most pediatricians recommend starting your baby at 4 months with rice cereal, mixed with enough water or formula to make it very thin. Use that for a week, then try (for a week each) barley, oatmeal and mixed cereals. If he tolerates cereals, start giving him Stage1 fruits and vegetables. Try each one for three days before giving him something new. At about six months, they can start on baby food meats. Didn't your son's pediatrician tell you this? With both of my boys, every time we went for a routine checkup, we'd get sheets that started out something like, "Your baby is X months old. This month you can begin..." then lists what new or different foods you can give your baby.

The doctors say not to give them solid foods till like their 6 or 9 month but my mom gave my baby like mashed potato and baby cereal when she was younger she is now 9 months. But check with your doctor if your baby has any medical problems.

Babies start eating solids at 4 to 6 months. You should start with rice cereal. Then try the oatmeal. Save the wheat and mixed grain cereal for last cause it can cause allergic reactions in some babies. After he is used to cereal you can try fruits and vegetables. Save eggs for last they can also cause allergic reactions. You can also start him on juice now. But save the orange juice and other citrus fruits until he is about 6 months.
