Same as a rabbit trap. One box held upright on one side by a stick, with food under the box. The stick is held by a line that you hold and pull when animal is inside getting the food. Simple.

The best answer is to buy a "Have a Heart" brand trap. One big enough for a possom should be around $60.00.
If you try any of the other answers, you might hurt the possom or have a problem getting him out of the trap for transporting him. The "Have a Heart" trap works well for transporting as well as catching the possom. Cat food works well for bait.

We have also caught one in a 30 gallon trash can by accident. We had a broken egg and threw it in the trash can. There was a plastic chair setting with its back to the trash can. The possom climbed up on the chair, and into the trash can to eat the egg and then couldn't get out. We just took a second trash can and set it inside of the first and used that as a lid, took them both out into a "release" area and turned him loose. That worked well, but the other is the most sure way.

It also works well on skunks and racoons.

Get a metal garbage can>stand it next to a table the has ramps to access the top of the table which is the same height as the garbage can.Through a can of open sardines into the garbage can and go to bed. In the morning go put the lid on the garbage can and get rid of your problem as you see fit.In the end you still have a perfect new garbage can for the house and it can be reverted back to trap status at a moments notice.Do not leave your dog or cat food out the night you try to trap.

Your better off buying a live trap from a hardware store. They will be much safer than build a box trap. The live traps work like this.

A container with a spring loaded door with latch and trip mechanism for the door. Animal walks in, steps on trigger, door closes.

It isn't a good idea to trap a potentially rabid wild animal yourself. You can call animal controll and they will send a proffesional out there to catch yer opossum.

Leave it alone please. They are carrying their babies on their backs right now and don't need your thoughtful interaction.
