an example of "one hand not knowing what the other hand is doing" is":
think of the Pentagon. Large building full of secret departments and bunches of rooms each with a small covert project going on in each room.
One room in the Pentagon might be working on a chemical weapon to destroy an enemy somewhere, while a different room might have a project going on that involves attacking a friendly nation.
The 2nd group secretly uses the chemical gas on the friendly nation that the 1st group invented. The idea is that we only do the jobs we are assigned, we don't look beyond the scope of our instructions. Therefore we are ethically and morally safe when someone uses one of our inventions for something we didn't want it used for.
Left hand "chemical weapons project" doesn't know what the right hand "project to attack friendly nation" is doing.

I think of the character in Family Guy, Adam West, who marries his hand and then he tells the other hand "you had your chance!". But I think that this answer isn't what your looking for.

It originates from the bible..Matt 6:3 and basically means..."The best type of almsgiving is where 'a person gives a donation without knowing who receives it, and a person receives it without knowing who donated it'. The idea that Jesus is encouraging is to give to truely help someone without calling attention to oneself.

In other words, don't be so anxious to spill your guts! Don't reveal your secrets,personal business, other peoples business to anyone. This can lead to gossip and gossip can lead to lies and confusion. Confusion can lead to strife, envy, jealousy and even death. Don't give Satan something to feed on and then to puke it out in your face! A meek and quiet spirit is what God is looking for. Satan can make a mess out of something so small, believe me!
