Chris Crutcher, Ned Vizzini, Darren Shan, William Sleator, Gary Paulsen, Louis Sachar all write good "boy" books. You may also want to check into graphic novels and comic books; The Boondocks by Aaron McGruder, any thing by Frank Miller; There are several Simpsons comics by Groening; Calvin and Hobs by Bill Waterspoon; the Justice League of America is making a comeback. They are quite popular with the guys.

I thought Seabiscuit was a really good book, and it definitely has a sense of humor. It also has the added delight of being true. And then if he enjoys it, he can also watch the movie. It might be a bit tough for a 12-year old, but only if he doesn't read too well, and it shouldn't pose the least problem for a 16-year old. I think I read it at about that age myself. Anway, good luck finding finding something!

Is it a boy or a girl?

If it's a girl I would recommend The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares. There are some adult issues like death and atrraction between teenagers, but it's well-written and humorous.

For a guy, I don't really know. No guys used to read for pleasure when I was that age range.

Good luck!

The 'Famous five' book series by Enid blyton is quite good for the 12-14 yr olds. But the 16 yr old may find it boring. Its about 4 kids and a dog. They solve mysteries.

If you like fantasy try the Dragon Jousters series by Mercedes Lackey. The first book 'Joust', is about Vetch a young serf who is rescued by a Dragon Jouster from his cruel master. He becomes a Dragon boy(one who takes care of dragons).Later he secretly hatches his own dragon. The later two books are about how he escapes to his native Alta and how the war between Alta and Tia ends. The setting reminds you of Ancient Egypt.

Take a Thief by Mercedes Lackey is about a young boy Skif who is ill-treated by his relatives. He later falls in with a gang of thieves and becomes a master thief.Later he gets bonded with a talking horse and is admitted to a Herald's College.

Reilly's Luck by Louis L'Amour. Its a western.A young boy is abandoned by his own mother(she tells her boyfriend to kill him)The boy ends up with a gambler and he brings him up.Turns out to be the best gamble he ever made. The boy grows up and later kills the people who murdered the gambler.

If you like duels and intergue try Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini. Its about Andre-Louis an illegitimate young lawyer who swears a vendetta against the noble man Marquis de La Tour d'Azyr who killed his friend. Its set in the days before and during the French Revolution. You can download this from gutenberg.org.

The mars book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs is also good. Captain John Carter of the Confederate Army is whisked to Mars and discovers a dying world of dry ocean beds where giant four-armed barbarians rule, of crumbling cities home to an advanced but decaying civilization, a world of strange beasts and savage combat, a world where love, honor and loyalty become the stuff of adventure.

In eleven books Burroughs takes the reader all around the Red Planet (and even to Jupiter), while the action and excitement never let up. Take a trip down the sacred River Iss to the Valley Dor at Barsoom's south pole, but be warned ~ you might wind up the meal for a flesh-eating plant man! Visit the city of Manator, where the citizens play chess with live pieces ~ to the death. Pay your respects to Ras Thavas, the Master Mind of Mars, who will be happy to transplant your brain into the body of your choice ~ or maybe into the body of a giant ape! Rescue princesses from impenetrable fortresses, gallop across the sea bottoms of Barsoom astride your eight-legged thoat, or race through the thin air of Mars aboard your anti-gravity flier. With this combination of super science and swordplay, not only will Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian tales provide thrills a-plenty, but you'll also discover that without Burroughs there probably never would have been Star Wars!

The complete Mars series

A Princess of Mars
The Gods of Mars
The Warlord of Mars
Thuvia, Maid of Mars
The Chessmen of Mars
The Master Mind of Mars
A Fighting Man of Mars
Swords of Mars
Synthetic Men of Mars
Llana of Gathol
John Carter of Mars
