Actually, I am the boss and if you wanted to shut me up you could say, rules were meant to be broken....my response would be....and you were expecting that raise when?
The best way to respond to your question, would be to say nothing.
When I have staff problems, I look for a reason. If you place blame, it causes friction and people tend not to cooperate after having a finger pointed at them. Maybe I haven't explained myself properly, or in a way that a particular person would understand. I find a lot of people are really busy trying to impress the boss, but there always comes a time, I will find out what was neglected. Computers don't make mistakes or lie. They are always there for you if you treat them right.
Tell your boss you didn't understand the procedure the way it was explained, that way he has to take time. You all benefit.
In your case you can take the rules and wrap them around the centre cardboard of toilet paper and tell him what he can do with the rules

I totally agree!! This is a hard one for me to swallow but is absolutely the truth. Remember he is the one that can make or break you come review time. So i just smile and nod my head even if I disagree. My boss hates to hear my ideas. I can't wait till i can get a new job. I just stay here because the schedule is good for kids and the pay is decent. Have a great day and Keep smiling!!

I guess that is kind of like - the customer is always right, no matter how wrong he is.
As far as how to reply, hmmm. I'm sure you'd like to tell him to kiss off. He probably also says "teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say".
Sorry you have such a crappy boss - mine is great.

Any person that uses that one is very insecure. When he makes bad mistakes do not comer for him. if he says something to you about his mistakes just reply that you are following the rules both one and two.
