Surely in the days of early man, the pragmatists would have been more likely to survive? How did dreamers survive this far into history?

Interesting question. It's hard to know what we were like back then, but my guess is that we always had both aspects to our nature, and actually depended on both at the same time.

Any family/group would always be made up of dreamers and pragmatists. The dreamers had the role of wondering, coming up with ideas and experimenting, while the pragmatists' role was to recognize the ideas and exploit them to some practical use. Any family/group that didn't value and protect the dreamers had an overall less chance of surviving, so this is how the dreamy side of our nature was preserved.

It's all relative of course. A dreamer by today's definition might have had little chance of surviving back then, but it's also pretty amazing how much of a pragmatist one can be when they get some real responsibility. Look at how the hippies of the 60s became the yuppies and corporate heads later in life!

p.s. sorry for the length - i guess the new font you see when typing your answer is deceptive!

As long as there are pubs......there will always be dreamers !:-)

First you have to clearly define aspiration, then you have to figure out how to scientifically study the evolution of it.
