1. Get a domain. Godaddy is one of the cheapest and most reliable http://www.godaddy.com. Or you can use a free website such as Geocities - if you are going to do business with it, a free site does not look too professional
2. Plan your website - what it will contain, what is it about, what is the value to visitors. One article that I found very useful is "7 Steps to Successful Web Site Development" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol142/website.htm
3. Develop your content. Write your copy, articles or other information you wish to put in your site. Or hire someone to write it for you
4. Create your site design. Either get a web designer to do it for you or start learning HTML, or use a web host that offers web site templates or site builders. If you will do it yourself, you can use software such as MS Frontpage, Dreamweaver or Adobe InDesign
5. Test for kinks - are your forms working, did you spellcheck, how about grammar, are there links broken, etc
6. Launch the site and market it. For inexpensive ways to market your business, read "Free Ways to Promote an Online Business" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/guide/cases/ii-lexi.htm
From the article "Tying It Together: SEO For The Big Three" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/052006/SEO.htm , a general timeline into getting a new site into the search engines would be (assuming you are working diligently at it and are targeting fairly competitive phrases with a new site):
2 - 3 months: MSN rankings secured
4 - 6 months: Yahoo! rankings improving
6 - 8 months: Yahoo! rankings secured and Google improving. Many secondary phrases are attained on Google.
8 - 12 months: Google rankings secured.

There are many ways to create a website. I suggest you make one without templates so that you have the most flexibility for updating and making changes down the road. I suggest a book."Creating Websites That Work" by Kathryn and Michael Summers. This is an excellent source for the novice or expert. Good luck with your site developing. Do remember one major factor, writing for the web is much different that writing for a book or newspaper.

Free or paid? Every yahoo person gets a free one at yahoo geocities.com but if you want to pay for one I am sure you can find them online easily. Just type in website ownership in your browser or on google and you will find plenty of people willing to sell you a website. Good Luck!

You can do it through Yahoo at www.geocities.com
It's free, as long as it's a personal web page.
