Sorry.

That's a common misconception generated by extremely old brain studies.
About 20 years ago, when imaging technologies started, it was proven that we use 100% of our brains, granted that we use different parts for different reasons at different times, but we use 100% none the less.
It makes evolutionary sense too, otherwise we'd have a bunch of useless tissue in our heads... and the tendency of evolution is to move towards efficiency in survival, and useless tissue is not efficient, just dead weight.

I say we don't. My daughter had a brain mass in the pool of liquid that doctors say do nothing. Every time the thing moved she lost memory or gained intelligence. such as she was doing algebra by four years old. Now the thing is gone and her intellect is average. just because scientist say we only use 10 % doesn't make it true.

I find it interesting that in the process of debunking the idea that we only use 10% of our brain, the author feels the need to point out that some young children have up to 50% of their brain removed and are still able to, albeit after extensive therapy, able to regain full operation of their utilities. I know at one point I saw a Discovery Channel show about just that happening - a very young girl had to have half of her brain removed and she was eventually able to lead a very normal life. We know that as you get older your brain becomes less adaptable, so to use as evidence of our need of 100% of our brains adults who suffer strokes and are permanently brain damaged is misleading.
In any case, I always thought the 10% of our brains quote just meant that we had not reached the limit of what our brains could understand. I tend to agree with this. Just look at some of the concepts in science and math which were completely unknown even 500 years ago which today are taught in high schools all over. It is only a matter of time until Relativity becomes a standardized topic for High School science classes.
So maybe we're today using 15-20% of our brains' potential...?
of course we don't physically use 10% of our brain. we're using 10% of its potential. it has a lot to do with our memory. thats right, we could store much more than we are even now. and i'm not talking about hocus-pocus evolutionary potential. what we have now. and 10% is surely innacurate. we're still just discovering the brain.
kefkakrist: relativity was taught in my regular physics class, abeit just a little. i don't think it will be standard fare for everyone in however many years. a lot of kids just don't care or don't want to learn. they (the regular students) will sluff it off as too complicated, and the liberal schoolboards will curse themselves for ever trying to push up standards. and science and learning hasn't always been a wholley upwards journey for mankind. in fact, i believe there were periods of time when the ancients knew much more than us in many areas of science. of course, every in every period of history, the common/worldly thought at the time was that they were the pinnacle of humanity. we look back and see that it was never totally true, and its true today.

I use more than that. I use 10% for normal things like body control, memory, conversation etc. but my psychic ability uses a couple more% and my genius ability to solve complex mechanical engineering problems is good for an extra 10%. Of course I'm not a normal person. Your percentage may vary.

We use all of our brain...100 %....it's just a myth created by psychics and all those "geniuses" to explain their "powers".....if you said we use less than that you don't know what you're talking about type it into the internet or something before making up some dumb answer...

Simply evolution my dear. We have only evolved to the point of using that much, but who knows? In millions of years we may be up to 50% and doing amazing things! (if we last that long)
